Introduction

DOC is condemning a series of thefts from the honesty box at the popular Anaura Bay campsite, north of Gisborne.

Date:  22 February 2017

Over a series of weekend nights, thieves have stolen campers fees from the campsite honesty box.

DOC’s East Coast Operations Manager, John Lucas, says the thefts take advantage of the trustworthiness of most campers.

"It’s very disappointing, the actions of a few people spoil it for the many regular campers that visit this beautiful spot. Campers have been flocking to this site for many years. For some, it’s a family tradition which spans generations" says Mr Lucas.

"The money taken from the campsite honesty box goes directly back into the management of the site. The result is less money for the upkeep of the campsite."

To prevent future thefts, the honesty box has been removed. Campers can pay their fees at the DOC office, bank deposit or, during peak periods when a warden is on site, by Eftpos.

Mr Lucas asks the public if they know anything about these thefts, or saw any suspicious activity, to report it to the NZ Police.
