The Northland Conservation Board briefed its new appointees on the Board's key projects and relationships in an induction day held at Mokonuiarangi Marae, Utakura, Hokianga on 23 May 2014.

The Northland Conservation Board briefed its new appointees on the Board's key projects and relationships in an induction day held at Mokonuiarangi Marae, Utakura, Hokianga on 23 May 2014.

The day also provided an opportunity for the new board members to introduce themselves, and to identify their conservation background and networks.

Mita Harris Northland Conservation Board Chair said, "The newly appointed Board members are highly motivated and offer an exciting new set of expertise to the Board. I think we can look forward to another very productive term and to achieving important conservation outcomes for Northland."

"I have an expectation that we will find our feet as a team in the next few weeks, and that we will be active in the Northland region. Our Board members will be responsible for their delegated local areas paying attention to partnerships and the monitoring of the Northland Conservation Management strategy (CMS)."

"With recent retirements, the Board has lost members of high calibre. We are grateful for their invaluable contributions over the years."

Associate Conservation Minister Nicky Wagner had announced 124 appointments to the 14 Conservation Boards around the country on 22 May 2014.

Northland Conservation Board member profiles

Mita Harris of Kerikeri (Chairperson)

Appointment term: 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2016
Mr Harris is a former Department of Conservation staff member. He has extensive links in the community throughout Northland. He is involved with conservation projects and historic heritage. He has relationship and team working skills, and chairing experience. His outdoor recreation interests are tramping, running, hunting and camping. He is of Ngapuhi iwi.

Tracey Andrews-Smith of Whangarei

Appointment term: 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2016
Ms Andrews Smith is a Strategic Project Wastewater Manager for the Far North District Council. She has over 20 years experience in construction management and has extensive knowledge of business strategy, project facilitation, the resource consent process and iwi engagement. She has post graduate training in sustainability and is accustomed to working in collaborative working situations. She is of Te Rarawa, Ngati Kahu, Ngati Kuri, Ngai Takoto and Ngapuhi iwi.

Ian McGill of Kerikeri

Appointment term: 1 May 2014 to 30 June 2015
Mr McGill's background is in the food and chemical industries with a BSc in chemistry and geology. He has a good knowledge of environmental and conservation issues. He has board member experience and is accustomed to working on conservation management strategies. His outdoor recreation interests are fishing, walking, cycling, and gardening.

Richard Robbins of Russell

Appointment term: 1 May 2014 to 30 June 2015
Mr Robbins is a part time coordinator for the Guardians of the Bay of Islands Inc. He has experience in resource management for land and marine areas. Mr Robbins has strong people's skills and knowledge of the region, the local culture and heritage. He has been a member of many environmental protection groups in the area. His outdoor recreation interests are walking, sailing, and bird watching.

Mike Finlayson of Kaitaia

Appointment term: 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2017
Mr Finlayson is a self employed project manager. He has in-depth knowledge of pest and predator control programmes from 10 years involvement with the Herekino Landcare Group. He has served on many community and environmental boards in Northland. His outdoor recreation interests are tramping, fishing, diving, hunting, and gardening. 

Doug Klever of Ahipara

Appointment term: 1 May 2014 to 30 June 2016
Mr Klever is a business owner and active conservationist. He has a keen interest in dotterel protection and has very good knowledge of local culture and values of tangata whenua. He has been instrumental in the success of many community care and restoration projects in the local area. His outdoor recreation interests are bird watching, golf, and fishing.

Alan Martin of Whangarei

Appointment term: 1 May 2014 to 30 June 2015
Mr Martin is a retired Chartered Accountant. He has skills associated with business, management, and governance. Mr Martin has a keen interest in the conservation of native flora and fauna and is involved with conservation trusts throughout Northland. His outdoor recreation interests are tramping, swimming, and gardening.

Luana Pirihi of Ruakaka

Appointment term: 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2017
Ms Pirihi is involved with many community environmental protection groups and trusts in the Northland area. She also has strong connections to local iwi. Her outdoor recreation interest is gardening. She is of Patuharakeke, Ngati Whatua and Ngapuhi, and Ngatiwai iwi.

Willie Wright of Whangarei

Appointment term: 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2017
Mr Wright is the current chair of the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group and is a private consultant. He has vast knowledge and experience in the Treaty of Waitangi process and Treaty settlements. He has extensive iwi and cultural awareness skills, as well as governance and directorship skills having being a board member on many trusts and local community groups. His outdoor recreation interests are fishing and camping. He is of Ngati Whatua and Ngati Porou iwi and Te Uri o Hau hapu.
