DOC is advising cyclists that the Kaiwhakauka Track, a side track of the Mountains to Sea cycle track, is temporarily closed after a bridge collapse on Friday.

The Mountains to Sea trail itself remains open as the Mangapurua section of the trail is unaffected, but a new bridge will be required before the Kaiwhakauka side track can be reopened.

DOC says the collapse of the historic Depot Bridge is thought to have happened late on Friday afternoon.

DOC Partnerships Director CNI David Speirs said the collapse of the Depot Bridge has damaged the suspension bridge beyond repair and a new bridge is now required.

He says the track section has been closed and an independent engineering investigation is underway to determine the cause of the bridge failure.

Mr Speirs says DOC will be meeting with the owners of Blue Duck Station and the Ruapehu District Council to assess the situation and replacement options are likely to take some months.

See Mangapurua/Kaiwhakauka Track for up to date information on the status of the Kaiwhakauka track or the Mountains to Sea cycle track.
