The hire of rowboats for use on Lake Waikareiti in Te Urewera has been stopped following a Department of Conservation review of a recent search and rescue operation involving the boats.

Recreational hunting is an excellent way to get into the outdoors and to reduce the number of pigs, deer, feral cattle and goats on public conservation land. Hunters are reminded before they head out they can apply for a permit “online”.

The kiwi injured in a possum trap a month ago was released at Opato in the Waioeka Gorge near Gisborne last week. The kiwi was released in a Punga forested gully and hung around for a few minutes sniffing the ground and ignoring staff then disappeared into nearby punga fronds.
