A ‘ghost’ whio that hatched on the Whakapapanui Stream in Tongariro National Park two seasons ago appears to have returned to the stream near Whakapapa Village with a mate this time.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between the Owhango Residents and Ratepayers Incorporated Society (ORRIS), the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Ruapehu District Council (RDC).

The Department of Conservation completed a pest control operation across Tongariro Forest last week. The operation, in conjunction with TBfree New Zealand, will protect some of New Zealand’s most endangered species and help prevent the spread of bovine tuberculosis.
