The new Heaphy Hut is the perfect destination for trampers walking the Heaphy Track Great Walk.
Whether you only have a couple of days or you're walking the entire 4-6 day track, the new and improved Heaphy Hut is well worth spending a night or two at.
The new hut has been built on the site of the previous hut at the Heaphy River mouth, 16 km from Kohaihai, and was opened to the public on 19 November 2012.
Built to make the most of natural light and with better insulation than its predecessor, visitors will enjoy a brighter, dryer hut environment. A large deck area provides a gathering spot for trampers to rest and catch a sunset.

"The hut accommodates 32 people in four separate bunkrooms. With a large communal area, gas cookers, cold running water, solar powered lighting, a wood stove and flush toilets, this hut is a real improvement over the previous one", said DOC programme manager, Jonathan Thomas.
The hut was built by Frank Byrne Builders of Golden Bay and has brought the Heaphy Hut up to the same standards as other Great Walk huts such as those on the Routeburn Track.
Bookings are required for the Heaphy Hut year round, as well as for all other hut and campsites on the Heaphy Track. Book Heaphy Hut online
