Date:  26 June 2013

The Department of Conservation has appointed Antarctica New Zealand chief executive Lou Sanson to lead DOC’s new conservation partnerships group.

Lou Sanson will join DOC’s senior leadership team as Deputy Director General – Conservation Partnerships. He will manage the group recently created in DOC’s new structure that is focused on working with outside organisations to grow conservation.

The Conservation Partnerships Group is specifically charged with developing conservation by building stronger relationships with iwi partners, along with community groups, local authorities, businesses, and other landowners.

Director General Al Morrison said Mr Sanson brings a wealth of knowledge to this new role through 11 years managing New Zealand’s Antarctic responsibilities.

“Lou is deeply experienced in developing and leading partnerships at both a national and international level.

In an earlier life Lou was also a senior regional DOC manager so he brings a strong understanding of the conservation business as well as a fresh pair of outside eyes.”

“I’m delighted to have someone with such strong credentials in environmental management to lead and develop DOC’s work with external partners.”
