    Funding boost for community conservation efforts

    Ninety community groups are to receive $3.6 million in Government funding to support conservation projects throughout the country, Conservation Minister Dr Nick Smith announced today.

    200th rowi kiwi returned to the wild

    The return of 12 juvenile rowi kiwi to the Ōkārito Kiwi Sanctuary today includes the 200th of this rare species to be raised through the successful BNZ Operation Nest Egg programme.

    Tahr ballot prize winners

    The first annual prize draw for tahr hunters who send in their hunting diaries to DOC has been won by Hokitika man Aaron Lourie and by Rex Mitchelle of Rangiora.

    World Oceans Day campaign in the bag

    The joint organisers of the World Oceans Day Reusable Bag Campaign, Hokitika's New World and DOC, were delighted with the response from local shoppers. Getting on for 1000 shoppers using reusable bags last week qualified for the draw for a $100 grocer voucher. There was also a huge response for the Colouring Competition from local children aged 2 to 13 years.

    Denniston coal mine gains access approval

    Conservation Minister Dr Nick Smith today announced his approval under the Crown Minerals Act for an access agreement for Bathurst Resources for its Escarpment Mining Project on the Denniston Plateau, near Westport.

    Fish survey finds no rudd in Mahinapua

    Following the recent disappointing discovery of the pest fish rudd in Lake Ianthe, Hokitika DOC and Fish & Game staff carried out a fish survey at Lake Mahinapua this week using a variety of traps and nets.
