The Otago Conservancy of the Department of Conservation (DOC) has appointed Dave Taylor to the Otago/Southland Pou Tairangahau position.
Dave (Ngāi Tahu) will take up his new role on 17 September and be based in both Dunedin and Invercargill. Dave is currently Area Manager for DOC’s Murihiku Area Office in Invercargill.
The Pou Tairangahau is a new position created as part of the Department’s new model of operating and external focus. It replaces two positions that were located in Invercargill and Dunedin. The primary purpose of the role is to lead the Department’s engagement with iwi, whanau and hapu.
“Iwi are the Treaty partner for the Department and their aspirations and those of DOC are well aligned. This role will enable opportunities for DOC and iwi to work together even more than we already do. The Pou will also be well linked to the Kahui Kaupapa Atawhai national group as part of the role,” Acting Conservator for Otago and Southland, Alan McKenzie said.
Dave has worked for DOC in operations management positions for over twenty years, gaining experience in Northland, Auckland, Wanganui, Marlborough/Nelson and Southland conservancies.
Commenting on his new role, Dave said: “The position is a significant change for me, but one my life and career has been increasingly moving towards. This will be a leadership position that is demanding and challenging but at the same time offering huge satisfaction in achieving positive outcomes for iwi, whanau, hapu, the wider community and the environment. It also seems that I am following in the footsteps of my ancestors who lived and worked throughout Southland/Otago and this brings additional meaning to the opportunity,” he said.
Dave's role as Area Manager of Murihiku Area Office will be taken up by Andy Roberts who will be acting Area Manager until June 2013.
