Access to the scenic reserve on North-Eastern beach of Lake Okareka (formerly known as the Aqua Skiers beach) is closed for the immediate future. The beach front area is under construction with the development of an amenity area for visitors.
The Department of Conservation has recently commenced work in the area explains Rob Griffiths Community Relations ranger for Rotorua Lakes “We currently have contractors working in the area doing earthworks. The plan is to develop the area to include a new road/carpark, picnic area and toilets in time for the summer months”.

“We are asking that the public refrain from using the area until works have been completed and rehabilitation has been achieved. At that point we will have a visitor asset that should be a great family friendly environment for all”.
This area of Lake Okareka has previously received unwanted attention in the form of bad behaviour & illegal activities.
“The local community & Department of Conservation with the help of the Police are committed to curbing these activities and encourages anyone to report anything untoward to either the police or the DOC Rotorua office” says Rob.
Beach access is expected to be open in time for the holiday season.
