Introduction

Learn about DOC's work with sharks/mangō.

DOC includes all sharks and rays recorded from New Zealand waters in threatened species assessments of marine fishes. This work includes research on the correct identification of New Zealand species and the description of newly recognised species.

DOC also contributes information and expertise to global threat assessments of sharks and rays by the IUCN Shark Specialist Group.

DOC works with scientists from crown research institutes, universities, government agencies and NGOs in New Zealand and internationally to improve our knowledge of the biology, movements and management of protected and threatened species of sharks and rays.

CMS and CITES

Great white sharks and basking sharks are listed on Appendix 1 and 2 and whale sharks are listed on Appendix 2 of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).

Listing on Appendix 1 of CMS requires parties to the convention to protect the species. Listing on Appendix 2 of CMS requires parties to the convention to cooperate on research and management.

All three species are listed on Appendix 2 of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

Listing on Appendix 2 of CITES regulates international trade in the species. DOC is responsible for issuing export permits for CITES listed species and works with Customs and MAF on border control.
