Introduction

These videos show how different species of native fish swim, how some can climb obstacles and why some structures in streams are barriers to their migration to the sea and back.

Banded kokopu

See how banded kōkopu can climb the side of a plastic box using their grippy fins.

Lamprey

See why structures in streams need to have rounded tops to enable lamprey to move over them.

Inanga

Children in Christchurch watch inanga swim along a culvert. Note how they can move easily where there are rocks in the bottom, but struggle when the surface is smooth.

More videos of freshwater fish are available on the New Zealand Fish Passage Advisory Group YouTube channel.
