Lake Paringa Campsite is an easily accessible campsite on the edge of Lake Paringa, 40 km north of Haast (approx. 45 min drive via State Highway 6). It's very popular with travellers, boaties, and anglers.
Dates
Volunteer to be a host at Lake Paringa campsite between November 2025 and April 2026. You will need to stay for two weeks or longer, and start and end your stay on a Monday.
Tasks
Your duties will usually take about 4 hours a day depending on how busy the campground is. These include:
• Campsite ticket/payment collection and recording
• Cleaning the facilities
• Providing information to visitors
• Communicating with DOC staff by radio
• Daily meeting onsite with DOC ranger
The rest of the day is yours to enjoy.
What to expect
Age: You must be aged 18 or over.
Fitness: Low level of fitness required.
Skills required: You'll need to be able to work alone and relate to a range of people in a friendly manner, and be culturally sensitive, fluent in English and have a practical outlook. First aid certificate preferable, along with experience relevant to this opportunity.
Accommodation: A free campsite is provided. Campsite hosts must have their own accommodation - we recommend a bus or caravan.
Food: Campsite hosts will receive vouchers to the value of $200 per week as a contribution towards grocery or fuel costs.
Travel: Campsite hosts need to find their own way to and from the campsite. Lake Paringa Campground is easily reached via State Highway 6, about 45 minutes north of Haast.
Pick up/meeting details: Campsite hosts will meet with rangers on site at the beginning of their stay. Inductions will be carried out on site.
Safety procedures: Approved volunteers must comply with the DOC Health and Safety Policy, and arrive prepared with appropriate amounts of food and warm/waterproof clothing.
Dogs: As the campground is within a scenic reserve, campsite hosts are not permitted to have dogs.

What happens after you apply
- All applications will be shortlisted by matching to role availability.
- We’ll send the shortlisted applicants the safety check form for you to complete.
- We’ll contact you about an interview time – the interview will be with a DOC staff member and it’s also an opportunity for you to ask questions about the role.
- We’ll talk to your referees.
- We’ll request a Ministry of Justice criminal record check – this takes around three days.
- DOC staff will assess all the material provided and decide on suitability.
- Once approved we will work with you to find dates that suit you and complete your induction.
