When
One weekend a month for three months – probably starting around August 2025.
Description
Pureora Forest Park is one of the largest remnants of mixed broadleaf and podocarp forests left in New Zealand with Waipapa and Pikiariki being the most important ecological blocks in the park. They are home to thriving kōkako populations along with short and long-tailed bats, kaka, dactylanthus and an abundance of other species of flora and fauna.
To protect the native taonga that call these parts of the forest home, DOC runs a network of 4500 bait stations across 4300 hectares.
The goal is to fill and check these in the months leading up to the start of the kōkako nesting season in November to reduce predator numbers at a time when the birds and their eggs are vulnerable to predation.
What to expect
Volunteers will be carrying about 10 kg of bait over mainly flat or undulating terrain to fill, top-up or de-bait bait stations in the Waipapa and Pikiariki blocks.
A reasonable level of fitness is recommended and, while training will be given, basic knowledge of the bush and bush navigation would be an advantage.
What to bring
You will receive a full list of what to bring before any weekends you are involved. This will include standard bush walking equipment (eg boots, waterproofs), plus a sleeping bag and overnight gear.
What will be provided for you
Basic accommodation for one or two nights and transport to the site.
Full PPE will be provided, including protective gloves and shirts, radios and GPS. Full training around toxin handling will be also be given.
