Description
Situated in a remote area of Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island/Rakiura, this activity involves maintaining historical sites associated with early farming on the island.
Tasks will include vegetation clearance around the historic woolshed and homestead. Minor repairs and maintenance of buildings, application of preservative to old relics, cleaning, and replacing piles. There is often the opportunity to explore the Mason Bay area after work hours, weather conditions permitting.
What to expect
Fitness/skill level
Medium to high fitness level. The work being undertaken is physical, especially when clearing vegetation off tracks and historic sites. Volunteers must be comfortable undertaking moderate physical activity for up to 8 hours a day. It is demanding work but very rewarding, in the beautiful setting of Mason Bay.
Accommodation
The Island Hill historic homestead.
Pickup/drop-off location and times
Meet at the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre, Stewart Island/Rakiura at 8:30 am on Wednesday 13 January. Volunteers will be returned to the same location around 2:30 pm on Friday 22 January.
Contribution towards food and transport
There is no charge for this activity. However, volunteers will need to make their own travel arrangements to and from Oban on Stewart Island/Rakiura. Transport from Oban to Mason Bay will be provided by either fixed wing plane or helicopter.
