Description
This is a fantastic opportunity to travel through Skippers Canyon and explore Mount Aurum Recreation Reserve. Learn about the rich history of the area, from early sheep farming to the first gold miners while also contributing to the upkeep of New Zealand’s historic heritage.
The remnants of Skippers township contains nationally significant historic buildings from the early gold rush era. Volunteers will carry out maintenance on the schoolhouse which will involve refitting loose stones, painting, and a general tidy up of the surrounding area.
What to expect
Fitness/skill level
Low fitness level. The Skippers area has full vehicle access so volunteers will only be required to walk short distances.
Accommodation
Four bunk hut with a hot shower and barbecue facilities.
Pickup/drop-off location and times
Meet at the DOC workshop, 1 Arthurs Point Road, Queenstown at 10:00 am on Monday 9 February. Volunteers will be returned to the same location at around 12:00 pm on Friday 13 February.
Contribution towards food and transport
There is no charge for this activity.
