Summary of proposal
The Department of Lands and Survey developed the Taupō native plant nursery in the 1960s. The land was allocated to DOC in 1987. The department continued to run the nursery until 1993, when it decided to lease it. DOC no longer wants to retain its workshop and field centre buildings.
Section 26(3) of the Conservation Act requires public notice of the proposed disposal to be given. 40 working days notice are required to be given under the legislation.
The public notice for this is attached. This will also be placed in the Taupō and Tūrangi News online newspaper.
The nursery land is shown on the maps below, including being outlined red on the aerial photo. The nursery lies approximately 4 km north-east of Taupō Central Business District.
How to make a submission
Any person or organisation may make a submission in writing to the Director-General on the proposal.
Submissions close 4.00 pm on Friday 13 November 2026.

Your written submissions must provide reasons for:
- supporting or objecting to the proposed disposal
If you want to be heard at a possible hearing in support of your submission you need to request this in your submission.
2. Send us your submission before 4 pm 13 November 2026

Once submitted, submitters' information is subject to the Official Information Act 1982 and may be released under that Act. If you wish to keep any part of your submission confidential, state this in writing when making your submission.
What happens next
After submissions close:
- The Minister of Conservation’s delegate will consider submissions and hold a hearing if required.
- A decision will be made on whether to continue with the disposal.
- If disposal is approved, there would be additional statutory clearances undertaken as required.
This process is in accordance with section 26 Conservation Act 1987.
