Nature is in trouble, but we are working hard to protect our native species from their threats. Pressure on our nature comes from several places, like climate change effects on land and sea, introduced pests and diseases, pollution, over-use and changes in the way land is used. Our plants and animals evolved here for millions of years with no mammalian predators or browsers, which makes them especially vulnerable.
The good news is that there are things we can do to manage these threats and when we do, it really makes a difference. And everyone has a role to play in helping nature.
New Zealanders across the country are taking action for nature. By donating, trapping in your backyard, volunteering your time, and getting out into nature - you play a critical role in conservation. To each of you, from all of us at DOC, thank you.
We want your thoughts on two important plans to help nature:
- The next implementation plan for New Zealand’s Biodiversity Strategy
- The Predator Free 2050 Strategy to 2030
We welcome feedback on these plans from 5 May to 30 June 2025.
