Proposed renaming of Rainbow Mountain Scenic Reserve
Introduction
Have your say on the renaming of a scenic reserve on the Rainbow Mountain-Summit Track, Bay of Plenty. Submissions closed 20 April 2021Pursuant to the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 2008 and in accordance with section 16 of the Reserves Act 1977, notice is hereby given that the Department of Conservation proposes to re-name a scenic reserve located near Rotorua.
Proposed name
This reserve is currently named Rainbow Mountain Scenic Reserve, with the proposed renaming as Maunga Kākaramea Scenic Reserve.
The scenic reserve is located at Rotomahana, Waiotapu Village, at the intersection of State Highway 38 and State Highway 5, approximately 30 km south-east of Rotorua. The Mountain/Maunga occupies approximately half of the scenic reserve extent.
The Mountain/Maunga was renamed in 2016 by the Hon Louise Upston, Minister of Land Information in NZ Gazette 28 July 2016 No. 67, as Maunga Kākaramea, with Rainbow Mountain as its alternative name. Either name may be used as the official geographic name.
How to submit
Submissions must provide reasons for supporting or objecting to the proposed name. If an objection is made then an alternative name may be suggested.

What happens next?
Before deciding on the name, the Minister of Conservation will consider any submissions received and refer them to the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa).
This is in accordance with section 16 of the Reserves Act 1977. Under section 27(3) of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008, submissions will be reviewed by the board.
