Proposed renaming of a marine reserve
Have your say on the proposed renaming of Te Whanganui a Hei Marine Reserve. Submissions closed 29 October 2020.

Pursuant to the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 2008, notice is hereby given that the Department of Conservation proposes to rename a marine reserve located near Mercury Bay, Whitianga, on the Coromandel Peninsula.

This notice advises of the following marine reserve name and seeks submissions from any person or organisation wishing to support or object to the proposed name (noting that this notice relates to the proposed name only and not to the establishment of the recreation reserve itself).

Proposed name

The reserve is currently known as Te Whanganui a Hei Marine Reserve. The name will be changed to Te Whanganui O Hei Marine Reserve.

How to submit

Submissions must provide reasons for supporting or objecting to the proposed name and if an objection is made, then an alternative name proposal may be suggested. 

Submissions are due by Thursday 29 October 2020 and should be sent to:

What happens next

After considering any submissions received on the proposed name, and before finally deciding on the name, the Minister of Conservation will refer them to the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) (“the Board”).

This is in accordance with section 16 Reserves Act 1977, in order to be reviewed by the Board under section 27(3) of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008
