Proposal for name and classification of Motu Kānuka Scientific Reserve

Pursuant to the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 2008, notice is hereby given that DOC proposes to name a scientific reserve in North Canterbury.

We seek submissions from any person or organisation wishing to support or object to the proposed name and reserve classification (noting that this notice relates to the proposed name and classification only and not to the reservation of the scientific reserve itself).

About the reserve

The reserve (~13ha) is proposed to be named ‘Motu Kānuka Scientific Reserve’, and it is proposed to classify this reserve as a scientific reserve for the purposes stated in Section 21 of the Reserves Act 1977.

The reserve is located near Eyrewell, between Oxford and the Waimakariri River. It lies to the east of Burnt Hill. The reserve has been created as an outcome of a Nature Heritage Fund purchase.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu/Ngāi Tūāhuriri have proposed the name for this scientific reserve.

How to submit

Submissions close Wednesday 9 October 2019.

Submissions must provide reasons for supporting or objecting to the proposed name and if an objection is made, then an alternative name proposal may be suggested. Submissions should be sent to:

What happens next

After considering any submissions received on the proposed name, and before finally deciding on the name, the Minister of Conservation will refer them to the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) (“the Board”)

This is in accordance with section 16A Reserves Act 1977, in order to be reviewed by the Board under section 27(3) of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008.
