This application is notified under section 17SC of the Conservation Act 1987. The Minister of Conservation has received an application requesting a lease over an existing building for use as a marae and land for carparking for a term of 10 years from Kororareka Marae Society Incorporated.

On the corner of The Strand and Pitt Street, Russell, Bay of Islands. Requesting a lease over a building previously used as a DOC visitor centre and car park area for their marae and other facilities.
Public conservation land: Russell Park Headquarters Government Purpose Reserve and Pitt Street Recreation Reserve.
Summary of proposal
The property has been used as a marae by the Kororareka Marae Society for the past eight years and it wishes to continue this use.
As per the application, the purposes of the Society are:
- To provide a central community centre and facilitate for local persons and Maori.
- To practice and promote Tikanga Maori and other cultural teachings.
- To act in a community support capacity.

Submissions close on Friday 15 June 2018 at 5 pm. Once submitted, submitters' information is subject to the Official Information Act 1982 and may be released under that Act. If you wish to keep any part of your submission confidential, you need to state this in writing when making your submission.
Any person or organisation wishing to be heard in support of his/her submission, must request (within that submission) an opportunity to appear before the Director-General.
DOC comment regarding publicly notified applications
The Minister of Conservation has made no determination regarding the suitability of this proposed concession on public conservation land. This public notification should not be interpreted as an intention on the part of the Minister of Conservation to grant the proposed concession.
If a hearing is required, it is likely to occur on the week starting 18 June 2018.
