Students can learn about the varied bird life of Farewell Spit in the Pūponga area.

    Farewell Spit, at the tip of the South Island, is New Zealand’s longest sand spit. The Pūponga ara on the Spit is a three hour drive over Takaka Hill from Nelson

    Field trip attractions include the internationally-renowned bird sanctuary, a historic lighthouse, pa sites, the seals, striking landforms of Wharakiki Beach and a cliff top viewing platform.

    The teaching resource contains background information on the history and biodiversity of the area and suggestions for class and site based activities and student activity sheets based on the themes of migrating birds, adaptations, food chains/coastal productivity, resource management and weeds.
