Is it being done at the direction of the Department of Conservation, ie is the work 1) being done at the request of, and under the supervision of DOC; and 2) aligned with the management functions and objectives of DOC?

Is it on public conservation land? Check DOC maps for public conservation land/water

Is it on a nature reserve, closed scientific reserve or a specially protected area? Check DOC maps

Does it involve taking anything (marine life or material) from a marine reserve? Check DOC maps

Does it involve putting anything (structures, bolts, substances, marine life) in a marine reserve?

Does it involve terrestrial wildlife? Includes most wild animals and invertebrates

Does it involve freshwater species? Live aquatic life as defined in the Conservation Act

Does it involve protected marine species other than marine mammals?

Does it include research on, or collection of geological material (rocks, soil etc) or water?

Does it include research on, or collection of flora (plants or plant material)?

Will it result in personal or commercial gain?

Does it involve marine mammals? Includes dolphins, seals, whales and other mammals in the sea

Does it involve aircraft (including drones)?
