WHAT YOU
CAN DO
-
Size and catch limits depend on where you’re fishing and change regularly. The best way to stay on top of the rules is to download the NZ Fishing Rules mobile app. You can also text 9889 with whatever you’re fishing for or collecting (like blue cod or kina) to get catch or bag and size limits.
-
DOC manages 44 marine reserves. These special places are protected from the ocean surface to the seafloor. Snorkel, dive and enjoy – but no fishing or collecting of any kind, including shells and driftwood.
-
If you come across a rāhui at a beach or fishing spot, please respect it. Rāhui is a customary tool used by iwi and hapū. It may be in place to allow a natural resource to recover, keep people safe or for another reason.
-
If you see illegal fishing, report it to MPI. For illegal fishing in marine reserves, call 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468).
HOW YOU'LL
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Taking kai moana that isn’t fully grown, or taking too much, causes fish and shellfish numbers to decline. That means fewer fish to catch and less food for seabirds and other marine life.
ARE YOU IN?
It takes everyone to make a difference for nature. Every little bit helps.
NATURE'S IN
TROUBLE
Thousands of our native species are heading towards extinction, but it’s not too late to save them.
All around New Zealand, Kiwis are bringing nature back.
