HUNT TO HELP NATURE
Hunt wild deer, goats and other introduced animals, and give future forests a chance to grow.
Every year, hunters remove more deer from public conservation land than any other group.

WHAT YOU
CAN DO
-
If you need help getting started, you can join a local hunting club or learn to hunt with the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association’s HUNTS programme.
-
Use DOC’s online tool to find places to go hunting. If you want to hunt on public conservation land, you’ll need to get an open area hunting permit. It’s quick and easy to apply online.
-
For guidance about how to hunt safely, ethically and in an environmentally responsible way, see DOC’s resources for hunters. We also have information on species available for hunting.
-
Take part in the annual National Wild Goat Hunting Competition. Hunt wild goats in stunning settings, compete for prizes and help remove goats from places that need protecting.
-
Build relationships with local landowners and help them hunt wild animals on their land. Wild deer, goats and other animals do not respect boundaries.
HOW YOU'LL
MAKE A DIFFERNCE
Hunters help give our ngahere and the species that live in them a chance to thrive.
Introduced deer, goats and other animals eat native shrubs and seedlings to the ground, contributing to the collapse of precious native forests. They are now found on 82% of public conservation land – up from 63% in 2013.
Every little bit we can do to stop the decline of native forests helps.
ARE YOU IN?
It takes everyone to make a difference for nature. Every little bit helps.
NATURE'S IN
TROUBLE
Thousands of our native species are heading towards extinction, but it’s not too late to save them.
All around New Zealand, Kiwis are bringing nature back.
