NZCA's advice on Environmental Science Research
27 January 2021: Read the NZCA's advice to the Minister of Conservation on the need for sustainable and reliable environmental research, data, and monitoring.

To: Hon Kiritapu Allan, Minister of Conservation
Date: 27 January 2021

At the Authority’s December 2020 meeting, there was considerable discussion about New Zealand’s science system and the irrefutable need to invest more significantly in science and sustained environmental monitoring. This will allow Government to better understand national priorities and ensure the measurement of the capability and capacity in delivering on these priorities.

In order to provide for sustainable environmental science research, the Authority strongly advocates for all new research and development to contribute towards environmentally sustainable outcomes; a proposal that is mandated by the Government’s declaration of a climate emergency.

This assurance of environmental research will provide opportunities, in line with the Aotearoa New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy, to provide not only for sustainable growth, but regenerative initiatives to be explored and invested in across industry.
