The Southland boards' district extends South from Queenstown, and 200-nautical miles beyond the coast, encompassing Stewart Island/Rakiura, the Bounty Islands, Antipodes Islands, Campbell Islands, Auckland Islands and Snares Islands/Tini Heke.
Significant areas
Fiordland National Park has international World Heritage status and covers an area of 1,278,578 ha of fiordland; the most famous of which is Milford Sound. The National Park features three of New Zealands’ Great Walk tracks; Kepler Track, Milford Track and Routeburn Track.
Stewart Island/Rakiura National Park is the third largest island and home to Rakiura National Park. The island is most famous for its population of South Island kiwi and endangered yellow-eyed penguin. Ulva Island sits close to Stewart Island and boasts a healthy population of birdlife; due to the low number of rats.
