The reports assessed natural areas across public and private land using the New Zealand Ecological Districts and Regions framework and documented their ecological values and identified Recommended Areas for Protection (RAPs)—sites considered important for the long-term conservation of indigenous habitats, species, and ecological processes.
While the programme is no longer active, the resulting PNAP reports remain an important source of ecological information and continue to be useful as a source to help inform conservation management, biodiversity assessments, land-use planning, and the identification and protection of areas of significant indigenous vegetation and habitats.
They remain one of New Zealand's most comprehensive sources of ecological information at the landscape scale.
Some reports were catalogued in a series under the same ISSN, others as separate monographs. All reports contain information relevant to this long running programme.
