Regional Threat Classification System (RTCS) manual 2026
The 2026 manual provides guidelines on how to use the RTCS and outlines the processes by which candidate taxa and informal entities must be listed at a regional scale.

The Regional Threat Classification System (RTCS) manual is reviewed following each alteration to the New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS) manual.

The Regional Threat Classification System (RTCS) is an extension of the New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS).

  • The RTCS provides a tool for assessing the extinction risk for taxa within Aotearoa New Zealand's sixteen geopolitical regions
  • It uses the NZTCS categories, status rankings and criteria, but is adjusted to reflect smaller regional scales.
  • Data and publications on RTCS assessments are published on regional council websites.
