Chatham Islands Landscape Restoration Trust
This community-led collaboration aims to restore ecosystems and protect species across the Chatham Islands.

The Chatham Island Council, Hokotehi Moriori Trust and Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri Iwi Trust established the Chatham Islands Landscape Restoration Trust to coordinate the strategy, planning and implementation of this goal.

Each of these organisations recognises the importance of a thriving environment to achieve the outcomes the trust seeks. By working together, they can maximise the impact of this small and remote community to protect the health of the islands it depends on.

DOC is a supporter and advisor for the trust. The local DOC Operations team integrates operational planning to align with and support the work led by the community. This work has included:

  • seabird translocations
  • restoration planting
  • community engagement events
  • biosecurity planning
  • predator control
  • eradication planning.

The vision of the Trust

'A land apart for people, plants and birds: restoring nature’s gifts.'

To achieve this vision

The Trust focuses on:

  • restoring forest cover
  • bringing back a range of seabirds and other species to enable ecosystems to flourish
  • building community capacity, capability and connection so that the island people also flourish.

These goals support achievement of desired outcomes of the Chatham Islands Investment Strategy 2024, including:

  • environmentally sustainable
  • socially and culturally connected
  • implementing Predator Free 2050.
