Remote monitoring systems (VMS/AIS)
Learn about monitoring seabird-safe practices using VMS and AIS.

Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and Automatic Identification System (AIS) information can be used to check if night setting protocols are followed. The information is used to work out when nautical sunset and sunrise are at the location where the vessel is fishing, and when the vessel starts and ends line setting.

A tool is under development by Global Fishing Watch that combines these two pieces of information to check if the set is fully carried out after nautical dusk and before nautical dawn.

Recommended minimum specifications

  • AIS/VMS is turned on for every set.
  • Setting times are reviewed in relation to nautical dawn and dusk.

What to report for each set

  • Was the set fully carried out after nautical dusk, and before nautical dawn.
