Sustainable visitor management for Tongariro
Introduction
DOC is implementing a range of changes to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing to better manage the pressures and strengthen cultural and heritage values in the area.Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro of Ngāti Tūwharetoa and DOC want to make sure the experience of walking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing:
- is sustainable and safe
- respects the cultural significance of the area
- protects the fragile environment.
Visitor numbers are putting consistent pressure on the conservation and cultural values of the area, as well as the infrastructure.
These pressures include congestion, waste management, environmental damage and lack of respect for the cultural significance of Tongariro.
By better managing these challenges we will better protect Tongariro for future generations.
DOC will be implementing a range of changes to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in the coming years. Our aim is to manage the pressures and strengthen cultural and heritage values in the area.
Tongariro Crossing booking system
DOC is introducing a free booking system starting 2 October for bookings 14 October onwards. We recommend visitors using any part of the track book in advance.
Book to use any part of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing
DOC will be able to communicate with visitors to Tongariro directly using information from the booking system. This will mean important information can be provided quickly.
Visitors who turn up to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing without a booking will not be penalised and we will not be implementing a cap in 2023/2024.
Visitors who have a Tongariro Northern Circuit hut or campsite booking are exempt from booking through the new system.
Bookings from this season will inform better management for Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Visitor information and feedback will help us shape future improvements.
