J.M. Barker (Hapupu) National Historic Reserve open

J.M. Barker (Hapupu) National Historic Reserve is open for visitors. Visitors are limited to local whanau and guided concessionaires only. Other visitors must book in with a guided tour with either concessionaire; Hotel Chathams or Awarakau Farmstays.

The reserve has been closed for the past 2 years to complete remedial work and to allow the forest to recover. As a result, the swift decline and breakdown has slowed somewhat and the canopy has recovered in some places but will require ongoing monitoring and management.

The breakdown of these internationally significant art forms, known as rakau momori or dendroglyphs, over time has seen a limited number remaining in Hapupu. Support us by respecting this site and observing the following protocols;

• Do not touch the tree. Stay outside the dripline of the tree so as not to disturb the root systems.
• Stay on the tracks which are clearly marked. Don't go off the tracks.
• Respect the site as a significant place.

The trees will likely breakdown over the next 5 to 10 years however your support in observing the protocols above is appreciated.
