Summary
Just twenty minutes by plane from Invercargill, or an hour by ferry from Bluff, Stewart Island/Rakiura is a place where you can experience lush rainforest, clear, clean water and abundant marine and bird life. With much of the island's area protected within Rakiura National Park (just under 140,000ha), the description of Stewart Island/Rakiura by naturalist Leonard Cockayne in 1909 as "an actual piece of the primeval world" is still relevant today.
This brochure provides information about the tracks and walks on Stewart Island/Rakiura. You can also find out more about Ulva Island/Te Wharawhara Marine Reserve and Te Whaka a Te Wera Mātaitai Reserve. Other information includes weather, naming, history and natural history as well as other things to do on Stewart Island/Rakiura.
