Mountain Radio

Mountain Radio is a high-frequency (HF) radio service that enables backcountry communication via volunteer base station operators.

Users are supplied with a radio (weight 2kg) including aerial. Daily scheduled contact times are established for users to listen to the weather report and pass on messages in an emergency.

Emergency distress beacon

A 406 PLB is a small 500gms emergency distress beacon that emits a radio signal when activated. This signal is picked up by satellite and/or aircraft. An alert message is relayed to the Rescue Coordination Centre of New Zealand to facilitate rescue. To be used only in life-threatening situations.
