Summary
Banks Peninsula was once a rich mosaic of plant and bird species, which human interference all but destroyed.
The few pockets which survive as public reserves give some idea of the diversity that once typified Banks Peninsula. Many of these reserves are easily accessible, close to the Summit Road.
The reserves and walks are scattered across the peninsula and are best accessed by car.
The roads on Banks Peninsula are narrow, steep and winding, and not all are sealed. Parking is limited at some reserves.
The main township of Akaroa is 83km from Christchurch - allow 1.5 hrs drive as the roads are steep and winding.
The following maps cover the peninsula: NZTopo 50 series: BX24, BX25, BY24, BY25.
