East Coast and Hawke's Bay hunting dog requirements

Published:

April 2005

Following a spate of kiwi deaths caused by dogs in the 2003-04 hunting season, DOC introduced a range of requirements to manage dogs on public conservation land.

Summary

Recreational hunting is an essential part of the battle to protect our forests from introduced browsing animals like deer and pigs. Well trained dogs can make recreational hunting more effective, however, untrained, unsupervised, wandering dogs can kill and disturb native birds.

Use this brochure to learn about how you and your hunting dog can help save endangered species in conservation areas, including how your dog can become bird safe. The brochure also lists which areas are open to hunting with dogs in the East Coast Hawke's Bay areas.
