Restoring the Balance: Biodiversity self-help kit

Published:

August 2004

This publication from DOC Northland shows how you as a landowner can help to protect the biodiversity values on your land by using the tools and actions provided in this document.

Summary

Much of the biodiversity of Northland is on private and is a risk from introduced plant and animal pest. It requires active management. In many cases a lack of 'known-how' is a major stumbling block to landowners doing more to protect their biodiversity. While information is available, it is scattered and often it is not in a format which landowners can readily access. Landowners often comment about the length of the 'voyage of discovery' they must take in order to determine the best tools and actions required to protect the biodiversity values on their land - indeed many give up!

Northland Biodiversity Forum members identified a need in the community for practical ideas for protecting and enhancing biodiversity. The members of the Group all had information existing in their various agencies but realised it would make sense to collaborate by putting the information into an easily read self help tool kit.

"Restoring the Balance" enables landowners to:

  • Assess the biodiversity values on their own property and the threats these values face.
  • Develop a management plan for their property to tackle whatever threat at whatever level they consider appropriate using the support of whatever agency expertise they choose
  • Implement effective biodiversity management on their property - to the level they consider appropriate.

Guidance is given to assist the landowner in identifying the property's natural values and then identifying the threats they may face. The landowner will then decide what values they wish to enhance and which management techniques they personally want to apply.

Information on management options include:

  • growing trees
  • plant and animal pest control to restore ecosystems and recover threatened or sensitive species
  • identifying native plants and animals
  • options for covenanting of land to provide legal protection
  • waterways and land beside water
  • community action
  • monitoring methods
