2005

This is a brief summary of the Northland Conservation Board Annual Report 2004-2005.

Summary

The Board's focus for 2004/05 continued to be on marine issues given the ongoing interest in marine protection around the beautiful coastline and islands.

The Board continued to develop a National Marine Park proposal extending from Cape Brett and around the Poor Knights Islands to Bream Head. A discussion document was prepared providing an overview of the issues.

The Department also sought comment on a proposal to identify sites suitable for World Heritage status nomination. In response the Board put forward a case for the establishment of World Heritage status for the Poor Knights Islands Nature and Marine Reserves.

Other issues that generated lively debate included:

  • the conservation of rare and endangered species by giving them commercial value
  • Mighty River Power application to operate Marsden B power station using coal
  • the role of the Environmental Risk Management Authority
