Wetlands teaching resource

Students can discover the different types of wetlands including bogs, pakihis, swamps, lakes, rivers, lagoons and estuaries. It is not site specific but focuses on West Coast wetlands.

Summary

This resource is designed to help teachers plan exciting and educational conservation learning experiences inside and outside the classroom. The information is aimed mainly at upper primary levels but the activities are designed so they can be adapted to suit any level, from lower primary to upper secondary.

Learning objectives

This resource is for all teachers interested in using wetlands as a context for environmental education.

A study of wetlands could meet objectives from the following learning areas;

  • Social Studies: Place and the Environment, Time, Continuity and Change, Resources and Economic Activities and Culture and Heritage
  • Science: Planet Earth and Beyond and Living World
  • Health and Physical Education: Healthy Communities and Environments
  • Technology: Technology and Society
  • English and Mathematics: A study of wetlands could meet objectives from all of the strands in these learning areas
  • The Arts: Developing Ideas in the Arts and Communicating and Interpreting the Arts
