Facilities on the island
DOC operates several campgrounds that can accommodate groups. These have minimal facilities - campsites, toilets, water and barbecue sites (at some). Campgrounds are located at Akapoua Bay (next to the DOC area office), Whangapoua, Medlands, Awana, Harataonga and the Green (privately run). Phone +64 9 429 0044 for bookings and information.
There is a back country hut with 24 bunks at Kaiarara on Forest Road. Hut tickets must be purchased from DOC Information Centre or Port Fitzroy Area Office. Fees $10 per night/adult, $5/night child.
The Orama Christian Camp near Port Fitzroy provides accommodation for school groups by arrangement, phone +64 9 429 0063.
There is no year-round public transport on the island, although buses run to the campgrounds during the summer. At other times shuttle buses need to be arranged in advance through Aotea Transport Ltd, phone +64 9 429 0055.
Supplies can be purchased on the island at Claris, Tryphena and Port Fitzroy.
