Summary

Ever wondered what genetic sourcing is really about? How a native plant can sometimes not be native? Why some birds and reptiles are critical to the survival of some plants? If you have, then this resource helps unravel these questions…if you already know all about it, then it can help you share your knowledge with others.

Canterbury is a large region with many unique habitats and plant ecosystems - many of which sadly go unnoticed and are undervalued. From the high country to the dry of the plains, through wetlands down to the coast, these remarkable plant communities exist. At the Motukarara Nursery these plant ecosystems come to life in the wonderful display gardens which provide the opportunity for teachers, students and the public in general, to see them in one place and in the flesh.

'Native plants, native places' is linked to the new 2007 curriculum and has been developed to support teachers and students who visit the nursery to learn about Canterbury's plant communities and their interactions with native animals. It can also be used back at school and out in the field and is packed full of easy to follow information and activities.

About Motukarara Conservation Nursery

The Department of Conservation's nursery and resource centre at Motukarara propagates over 120,000 plants each year. Its display gardens, at Motukarara, are living examples of Canterbury plant communities. Each of the main habitat types found in Canterbury is represented, from coastal Banks Peninsula to dry Mackenzie Basin grasslands. There is also a collection of threatened plants and plants of cultural significance. People can use the gardens to see the forms that plants grow into, and which plants naturally grow together.

Motukarara Conservation Nursery is located within the Waihora Domain at Motukarara, signposted from the Christchurch-Akaroa Highway (SH 75), 30 kilometres from the centre of Christchurch.
