Preface
This Draft Management Plan for Fiordland National Park (March 2006) has been prepared in accordance with sections 46 and 47 of the National Parks Act 1980. This statutory document implements the Mainland Southland - West Otago Conservation Management Strategy and provides for the management of Fiordland National Park in accordance with the Act and General Policy.
The Southland Conservancy of the Department of Conservation has prepared this Draft Management Plan in consultation with the public and with representatives from tangata whenua, the Southland Conservation Board and other interested groups and individuals.
Following notifying the initial draft of the Fiordland National Park Management Plan in 2002, the Department received 2107 submissions. This revised Draft Fiordland National Park Management Plan takes into account these written submissions and the submissions hearings and meetings that subsequently followed. This revised Draft Fiordland National Park Management Plan is to be sent to the Southland Conservation Board in March 2006.
Once approved, the plan will be effective for up to ten years from the date of approval, but a review may occur at any time due to increased knowledge or change in circumstance.
The Draft Fiordland National Park Management Plan was released in November 2002. Following submissions, subsequent hearings and meetings there have been a significant number of changes made to this draft plan.
