Didymo, otherwise known as rock snot due to its unsightly appearance, has infected a number of South Island rivers since it was first detected in Southland’s Mararoa and Lower Waiau rivers in 2004.
Didymo is an invasive freshwater alga that threatens the health of our waterways, but it can be stopped, and you can help. In order to reduce its spread in Fiordland, there are a number of things you can do:
Comply with the didymo controls for Fiordland National Park. This means finding out what the
requirements are before planning your trip.
