Report on the blue whale stranding on the northwest coast of the South Island, New Zealand May 2009.


Summary

On 26 May 2009, two commercial paua (abalone) fishers discovered the washed-up body of what was thought to be a blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus intermedia) 6-7 kilometres south of Whanganui Inlet on the northwestern coast of the South Island, New Zealand.

DOC sent officers to investigate the stranding on 28 May 2009, this report is the result of that investigation.
