Guidelines for minimising acoustic disturbance to marine mammals from seismic survey operations

Published:

February 2006

This code of conduct has been developed between DOC and industry to minimise acoustic disturbance to marine mammals from seismic survey operations.

Summary

The potential exists for seismic survey operations at sea to have an adverse impact on marine mammals. These guidelines aim to minimise potential impacts without unduly affecting normal operations. We recommend these guidelines be followed by all seismic vessels operating in New Zealand waters (from the coast to 200 nm)3.

These guidelines have been endorsed by the Petroleum Exploration and Production Association of New Zealand (PEPANZ). The Department of Conservation and industry strongly encourage those proposing development in the marine environment to follow these guidelines to the best practicable extent. The reference document provides background information justifying the key recommendations in the guidelines.
