Summary

The Central North Island remains a stronghold for the endangered whio (blue duck, Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos) and the Manganui o te Ao and Retaruke Rivers Whio Security Site is one of eight sites designated nationally as a priority site for whio protection, with the goal of securing 50 whio pairs at each site primarily through stoat control.

The aim of whio management nationally is to secure 400 pairs of whio at the eight Security Sites throughout New Zealand.
