Summary
Whio (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos) have been released into Egmont National Park in order to re-establish a self-sustaining population. The last two seasons for the Taranaki population have proven to be very successful. The focus of this whio programme is to develop a stable, self-sustaining population at this recovery site. Several factors show the population's capacity for natural growth is improving, including stability in the number of territorial pairs, a high proportion of pairs attempted to breed, nesting success was high, several ducklings were seen, and Whio Operation Nest Egg was successfully implemented for a second season, resulting in a new cohort of six juveniles recruited into the Taranaki population.
