While written for South Canterbury,
this brochure contains information that
is relevant to all braided rivers
Summary
New Zealand's braided rivers are special environments. Much of the wildlife adapted to live in them is unique. The extent and quality of this habitat is declining and many of the species inhabiting braided rivers are threatened with extinction.
This brochure outlines the values and threats to braided river habitats and the birds that live in them. It highlights six of these special birds and the way they use braided rivers for feeding and breeding.
It includes the braided river care code which gives visitors to these areas some tips for how to behave in river beds to prevent disturbance to breeding riverbed birds.
This brochure is published for Project River Recovery, which is focused on protecting the rivers of the Upper Waitaki Basin, South Canterbury.
